In 1989, someone was looking to add a voice to a computer interface and the wife of the "You've got mail" guy suggested her husband.

Edwards ended up recording a couple other sounds along with the "You've got mail" sound. They are, "Welcome", "File's done", and "Goodbye".

The rest is history.
